With subtraction, you take out numbers instead of adding. You take out what is on the second number from the first number. For example, 5 - 3. You take 3 (the second number) from 5 (the first number). Therefore the answer is: 5 - 3 = 2
You can break it down into this. Start taking out one number at a time from each of the two numbers, until the second number reaches 0. 5 - 3 = 1 1 1 1 1 1 As you see, there are three 1's on each side. Taking three 1's from the right side will end with then number 0. And taking three 1's from the left side will end with the number 2.
2 0 = 2
But be careful. Sometimes the second number can be larger than the first number. For example, 3 - 5 In this case you will do the same thing, but this time the number on the right will reach 0 before the number on the left. This is where the sign (-) is presented. 3 - 5 = 1 1 1 1 1 1 The three 1's on the left have reached the number 0 before the the number on the right. Therefore, you continue taking out numbers until the right number reaches 0. While you are doing this, you add the sign (-) next to the number on the left. -1 1 -1 1
-2 0 = -2
Another easy way to do this, is by reversing the two numbers, then when you get the result you add the (-) sign. For example: 3 - 5 = 5 - 3 5 - 3 = 2 Add the (-) sign next to the above answer 2 > -2 3 - 5 = -2
