Fact 1: Dogs are domestic mammals. It is a subspecies of the gray wolf. Also related to foxes and jackals.

Fact 2: It is said that that total dogs in the world are around 400 million dogs.

Fact 3: The domestic dog and the domestic cat are the two most popular domestic animals in the world.

Fact 4: Dogs can be used in many tasks for humans, such as hunting, farm work, and security.

Fact 5: There are more than 400 different breeds of dogs. Examples of these breeds include: Bulldog, German Shepherd, Collie, Golden Retriever, St. Bernard, Greyhound, Bloodhound, Chihuahua, Labrador, Great Dane, Rottweiler, Boxer, Cocker Spaniel, Afghan Hound, and Saluki.

Fact 6: Humans help train various dog breeds to enter in competitions such as breed shows, agility and obedience contests, racing and sled pulling.

Fact 7: Dogs have stronger hearing than humans. It is so strong a dog can hear at four times the distance. They also have acute smell, they are capable of differentiating odors in concentrations nearly 100 million times lower than humans can. However, their eyesight isn't as strong as their sense of smell, and their tase is so poor that they can eat almost everything without much discrimination

Fact 8: The average life span for a dog is around 10 to 14 years.

Fact 9: Those involved in dog breeding refer to males as "dogs", females as "bitches", dogs younger than a year old as "puppies" and a group of offspring as a "litter".

Fact 10: Puppies at the age of 6 - 8 weeks have 28 teeth. By the time they reach 6 to 7 months old these deciduous teeth are all replaced by 42 adult teeth.

Fact 11: Domestic dogs are omnivores, they feed on a variety of foods including grains, vegetables, and meats.

Fact 12: The smallest recognized dog breed is the Chihuahua. It is named for the Mexican state of Chihuahua, and stands about 13 centimeters tall and weighs 0.5 to 3 kilograms.

Fact 13: The gestation period for the female dog is about 63 days. This may vary if the female dog has been bred two or three times or if the eggs are fertilized a day or two after the mating has taken place.

Fact 14: The number of puppies being born can be different from one breed to another. For example, a Yorkshire breed can have 2 to 3 puppies. Large-breed litters can have as many as 10 or 12 puppies, although the normal female dog can suckle up to 8 at a time.

Fact 15: All dogs have 27 bones in the spine from the skull to the point where the tail begins. The number of tailbones, however, and therefore the length of the tail, varies from breed to breed.

Fact 16: The front legs of a dog are called the forelimbs, and the back legs are called hind limbs. A dog uses its legs for movement, for scratching, and, in some breeds, for digging. A dog’s foot, or paw, has five toes. One of them (the dewclaw) is too high to be of any use.
